I always find these arguments really weird, like people are trying to create a pseudo-world into which they can safely place all the problems in society they are afraid to confront.
Activities people engage in on a daily basis aaaare a part of the real world. Video games are real in the sense they can perpetuate stereotypes or be harmful in other ways- just like movies, tv, whatever. Nobody is trying to argue that, say, the snake-spined women of video games are actually going to come to life. But there is no end to the number of studies that show how media can impact not only our perspective, but how we then treat others. When a video game perpetuates a stereotype about black people in its “non-existent world,” that isn’t accidental or the result of “imaginary world race interactions” taking place in some imaginary sphere of existence. It reflects and further broadcasts oppressive beliefs people hold about others in the real world. These worlds are linked.
(not to mention most people critiquing video games etc. do talk about non-media oppressions, or “real world,” as well? I would actually be surprised if there’s more than a handful of people who ONLY worry about sexism etc. in that form)
