The Homestuck Essay Contest is an open competition between the thinkers and academics that love Homestuck to put their best foot forward and generate a piece of writing based on their enjoyment of this excellent story. The winner will recieve Homestuck swag, along with a smaller prize for second place, and an honorable mention for third. Scroll down to learn about prizes.
The rules are as follows:
- One submission per person.
- Essays are due by Oct. 10th to mentalletters@gmail.com with author’s name, location and additional information you desire to give with the essay (such as a link to your Tumblr).
- You may choose any topic relating to Homestuck. Comparison to other works, critique of the style, character/theme studies, philosophical considerations or the influence of the fandom are just some ideas. If you are unsure of your subject, just ask us.
- It should be long enough to make your point and not long enough to be rambling.
- It should contain citations, research, quotes and a bibliography when needed. It would be hopeful that future essays can even cite your work in another contest.
- It should be well proofread and contain no errors. Obvious errors can lead to default disqualification.
- The essays will be judged by a team of Homestuck fans from a range of backgrounds, including literature, art, science and (of course) fan fiction, cosplay and Tumblr enthusiasts.
- The winners will be announced on Oct. 15th. They will be sent their prizes soon after (shipping and handling is covered by us).
- First place recieves $75 worth of Homestuck products of their choice (and we cover the S&H and tax).
- Second place recieves a Homestuck shirt of their choice.

Hey guys! A couple friends and I are running a Homestuck essay contest with some awesome prizes if you win! Judging by all the Homestuck meta that comes up on my dash, I can see this contest getting some really interesting writing—all of which will be posted on the departmentofletters Tumblr for everyone to enjoy.
